Eczema Types - Eczema Symptoms |
Atopic dermatitis
Usually, people known atopic dermatitis as “eczema”. It is a chronic and long-lasting skin inflammation. People with atopic dermatitis need daily care because of its condition that is itchy, dry, and irritated skin.
Most people – about 90% - get atopic dermatitis or eczema before the age of 5. However, atopic dermatitis or eczema is not a contagious skin problem. So, you do not have to worry about contacting or touching someone else. But, people who usually have family members that having asthma, hay fever, or eczema may get higher chance to get atopic dermatitis or eczema because this skin problem tends to run in families.
Symptoms and Signs
Below are the lists of atopic dermatitis or eczema signs and symptoms:
- If there are some small, raised bumps on the skin. They may crust over and leak fluid when being scratched.
- If there are some red to brownish-grey colored patches on the skin.
- If your skins become thickened, scaly, or cracked.
- If your skin is sensitive from scratching.
- If your skin becomes itching and may be severe at night.
Common affected area:
- Hands and feet.
- Behind the knees.
- On the ankles.
- Elbow (the bend area in the front).
- Face.
- Neck.
- Upper chest.
- Wrist.
- Skin around the eyes (including the eyelids).
Contact dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. It happened when someone contacting with everyday objects such as jewelry, shampoo, foods, water, and so on.
If someone get irritated skin during contacting with those objects, the eczema is called irritant contact dermatitis while if the allergic reaction occur after exposure of the objects, the eczema is called allergic contact dermatitis.
Symptoms and Signs
Following are the symptoms and signs of contact dermatitis or contact eczema:
- If there are some red rashes or bumps on the skin where it limited to the exposed area only.
- If the exposed area become blistered, crusty, and draining fluid in severe reactions.
- If you feel very itch which may be severe on the exposed area.
- You will feel pain or tenderness at the exposed area.
- Your exposed area skin becomes red patches, dry, and cracked which look like a burn.
Common affected area:
- Wrist (watchband, bangle).
- Neck (necklace, scarf, perfumes).
- Finger (ring).
- Ear (earring).
- Eye (eye makeup, airborne substance – nail polish or fragrance).
- Hands (glove, occupational hazards).
- Feet (shoes).
- Armpits (deodorants).
- Face (cosmetics).
- Waistband (belt, trouser stud).
- Forehead / hairline (hair dyes).
Dyshidrotic dermatitis
Dyshidrotic dermatitis only occurs on the palms, soles of the feet, and sides of the fingers. This kind of eczema will cause a blistering rash and burning or itching sensation.
Symptoms and Signs
Following are the symptoms and signs of dyshidrotic dermatitis or eczema:
- There are small blisters on the hands (palms, side of the fingers, soles) or feet.
- The skin becomes inflamed (reddish and hot to the touch).
- The skin crack and peel. For severe cases, the skin may crack and peel extensively.
- The affected area may sweat excessively.
- Sometimes, the skins peel and new blisters appear as the skin has clear.
Hand dermatitis
Actually, hand dermatitis is not another specific type of eczema problem like seborrheic dermatitis or atopic dermatitis. It is a big category that any type of eczema which develops on the hands can be classified. Hand dermatitis being a special classification because it is often has unique causes (usually job-related) and may require special treatment considerations.
Signs and Symptoms
Below are the lists of symptoms and signs for hand dermatitis or eczema:
- The first sign of hand dermatitis or eczema is your hands skin dry and chapped.
- After that, the hands tend to form red, scaly, inflamed patches that very itchy.
- The skins may crack and weep besides the formation of itchy blisters or other lesions.
- If the skin infected, pain, crust, and pus-filled lesions will occur.
- Moreover, if the infected skin not being treated, it may spread to the forearms and feet.
- If hand dermatitis being persists for too long, the nails may deform.
Neuro dermatitis
People who suffer from neuro dermatitis may feel like wanted to scratch strongly at the affected area because they will feel the itchiness never relieve. This type of eczema develops when the endings of the nerve in the skin become irritated and triggering a severe itch-scratch-itch cycle. The common causes of nerve irritation including an insect bite and also emotional stress.
Signs and symptoms
Neuro dermatitis or eczema symptoms and signs are:
- Your skins feel very itchy. It become itchiest when you relaxing or not doing anything.
- The more you scratches, the more it itches.
- It will develop on any area that you have been scratch or rub.
- Some patients may suffer from nervous tension due to the constant itching.
Common affected area:
- Lower leg
- Ankles
- Wrist
- Neck (back or side)
- Forearms
- Genital area
Nummular dermatitis
Nummular dermatitis often appears after a skin injury (insect bite, burn, abrasion) and it is unique in shape like oval lesions or coin-shaped. As a result of the eczema, one or many patches may develop and it will last for weeks or even months.
Symptoms and Signs
Nummular dermatitis or eczema can be detected when someone gets:
- Oval or round skin lesions.
- Burning and itchy skin lesions.
- Red, pinkish or brown skin lesions.
- Well-defined skin lesions.
- The skin lesions look clear in the center and have ring around border.
Common affected area:
- Leg
- Arms
- Hands
- Torso
- Feet
Occupational dermatitis
This type of eczema also is not one of the specific types. It is any type of eczema that caused by person’s occupation. The existence of this eczema group is because occupational dermatitis has unique causes and many people get eczema from their job.
Symptoms and Signs
The symptoms and signs for occupational dermatitis or eczema are such as:
- For mild cases, you will notice that your skin become dry and chapped.
- For severe cases, you may experience redness, scaly, swelling, cracks, and blister skin. Skin ulcer also may appear.
- Your skin will look raw and irritated.
- The affected skin may feel itching, burning, or/and stinging.
- If the problem persists for a long time, your skin may become thicken.
The common affected areas are:
Common affecting occupation:
- Cleaner – cleaning product, detergent, solvent or wet work.
- Floor layer – solvents.
- Healthcare professional – wet work, detergents, or disinfectants.
- Beauticians – disinfectants, acetones, or dusts.
- Hairdressers – wet work, shampoos, dyes, bleaching agents, or permanent wave solutions.
- Painters – solvents, thinners, aggressive hand cleaners, wallpaper adhesives, or mould/antibacterial agents.
- Abattoir workers and butchers – waste products, detergents, wet work, or acid and alkalis.
- Agricultural workers – pesticides, oils, gasoline, solvents, artificial fertilizers, cleaning products, disinfectants, diesel, dusts, soil and food products, or wet work.
- Rubber products workers – zinc stearate, talc, uncured rubber, or solvents.
Seborrheic dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis begins as the oily and waxy patches on the scalp. Sometimes, it will spread to the face and beyond. For severe case, however it rare happened, widespread lesions being produced and it tends to flare in dry, cold weather like most types of eczema.
Signs and Symptoms
People who suffer from seborrheic dermatitis or eczema may experience these symptoms and signs:
- Scalp become dandruff and flaky.
- Scalp skin turn greasy red covered with flaky scales.
- Your scalp feels very itchy and sore.
- White or yellowish scales produced on the scalp. Sometimes, they may attach to the hair shaft.
- Crusty or scaly skin patches.
Common affected area:
- On the scalp
- Eyebrows
- Sides of nose
- Behind the ears
- Armpits
- Breastbone
- Groin area
- Folds in skin
Stasis dermatitis
Stasis dermatitis occurs when the blood circulation becomes sluggish. It usually develops in the lower legs. Poor blood flow will causes the fluids to build up and the legs to swell. Sooner or later, the fluids will affects the skin and causing a rash which is itches, painful sores, thinning, and discolored skin. Thus, an effective treatment is needed to get rid of the eczema and improve back the blood circulation problem.
Symptoms and Signs
Sign or symptoms of stasis dermatitis is usually cannot be detect at first. But, over the time, you will notice the following conditions:
- You will feel itch on your inner ankles and it will turn red.
- One or both of your lower legs may swell.
- There are open sores that can be very painful and heal slowly.
- When the skin becomes infected, honey-colored crusting will appear.
- If you repeat scratching or rubbing the itchy area, your skin will become thicken and darken.
