Microcephaly may occur because of genetic defects that disturbing the cortex growing in the early stage of fetal development. It is closely associated with Down syndrome, Chromosomal syndrome, and also Neurometabolic syndrome.
A baby may suffer from microcephaly if the mother exposed to:
- Alcohol and drug abuse.
- Cytomegalovirus infection, rubella.
- Chicken pox (varicella).
- Toxic chemicals.
- Fenilketonuria medication (LGK).
Babies who were born with microcephaly will have smaller head size than normal children that are same age with them. However, there are certain babies that look normal during birth but at the same time they are suffering from microcephaly. The symptoms of microcephaly are late being detected.
Microcephaly symptoms and signs
Depends on the syndrome that the children suffer, they may have:
- Mental retardation.
- Late to speak.
- Face distortion.
- Hyperactive.
- Difficulty in balancing or coordination.
- Dwarfishness.
- Brain and neurological disorder.
Some of microcephaly kids have a normal fitness and their head also growing but the circumference of the head are not as same as the other normal children.
