In the process of testing alternative treatments, I became so fascinated and interested, that I decided to become a practitioner of the traditional Chinese medicine. One month after my decision, my husband was asked if he wanted to work in Malaysia. I took that as a sign, that my decision was right, If I wanted to learn the art of acupuncture, what could be more right than to learn it from where it originates, Asia.
It wasn't easy though, to find an acupuncture-"school" with English speaking instructors. After asking around, a friend of mine finally helped me, through her contact with a Chinese reflexologist. As soon as I traced the telephone number, I made an appointment with Master Leong, at The Tole Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Centre, who wanted to see me for an interview, before letting me attend the course. My first impression of Master Leong was confidence. |

Anyway, we were six anxious students attending the first class, a Sunday - afternoon in May 2001. Once a week, we've learned the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine. How the Zang-organs and the Fu-organs work, the five elements (fire, wood, water, metal and earth) and how they work together, the learnings of Yin and Yang. We learned the theory of Qi, Blood, Body fluid and the concept of the Energy Channels.
Acupuncture is about stimulating energy channels distributed over our whole body. Our energy channels are all linked with each other, the whole body is a fantastic interconnected being and if you want to improve your health, you have to look at the whole body and the life that you live. |
|
My experiences with the western medicine are instead of is, to a large extent, that most of the western "healers" are very specialised and do seldom take a holistic view in finding good healing solutions, solutions that also tries to really heal and not just carve away the symptoms. There are twelve energy channels, each possessing an exterior and interior relationship. Acupuncture is, once again, an art to stimulate our energy channels and make us healthier form all perspectives. |

After the theory sessions, it was time for practice. As a student, I am helping to connect the electric wires to the needles to the body (as that is the kinds of acupuncture we are learning), to pull our the needles, take the blood pressure and comfort the patient. I used to be an economist, and haven't had the experience of taking are of patients, some with severe health challenges, before so this was all new for me. The first time, I was a bit nervous, I didn't know how the patients would react by my presence. But I didn't have to worry. After pulling out more than 2000 needles, I was ready to learn how to attach the needles myself! James Wong, one of the other students, volunteered. Personally, I used to be a bit scared of needles, but I must say, that everything turned out very well. He only screamed once. |

Molly, the new secretary at the acupuncture center became my first patient. And I must say, I think she is a very brave woman. It was the first experince of acupuncture for her. A couple of treatments later and now she's developed a bit of a scare of needles. Who doesn't know how it is to be a beginner. Still, she wants me to treat her (maybe because it helps or maybe because I still is not charging her). We practice twice a week at The Tole Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Centre. During my time at the center, I meet patients with various kinds of problems, I've also got the opportunity to experience a little boy of 18 months, recovering after a brain operation. The first time I met him, he couldn't move his left arm and leg. Today, he wave at me with the same hand when i see him. I really enjoy my days at the centre. It's a very friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Master Leong is very professional and takes care of the patients like they are the best customers in the world. It doesn't hurt that I also find Master Leong having a lot of humor.
After almost nine months of intense theoretical and practical training, i'm now ready to continue with the next step in my acupuncture development. To become a professional acupuncturist. within all it's perspectives, and Chinese physician it takes between 5-10 years.
As i started to say, my interest for acupuncture and Chinese medicine started about three years ago. After learning more and seeing a lot of healing at my practice, The Tole acupuncture adn herbal medical centre, I feel even more motivated to develop my skills and try to help others to a more meaningful and healthier life. |
