One of the most frequent asked questions about autism is “How many people have autism?” It is difficult to answer because there is no central register of everyone who has autism in this world yet. Because of the less prevalence data on autism worldwide, there are a lot of researches had been made about autism nowadays around the world. As a result, estimates of prevalence have increased considerably. |

Below are the estimated numbers of individuals that having autism problem in selected nations:
- India – 2,000,000
- United States – 1,500,000
- China – 1,100,000
- United Kingdom – 650,000
- Philippines – 500,000
- Thailand – 180,000
- Mexico – 150,000
In China, Autism is called ‘zi bi zheng’ and it is considered as a type of mental disability. Until the 80s of 20 century, there is no diagnosis of autism in China which is 40 years late from the international society. So far, only about 100 doctors who can expertly diagnose autism in China.
In 2007, a survey had been made on 60 thousand of children between 0 to 6 years old. The result of the survey was found that there are about 104,000 children with mental disability in China with 15,000 new patients every year. This was put autism problem as the top of the list.
For now, there are about 3000 of children that suffer from autism syndrome in Beijing. If including with the adult patients, the number is much bigger. There is no special school for autism children yet but the autism therapy centers are a lot today.
