Oral cancer is one of the subtypes of head and neck cancer. Oral cancer occurs when there are cancerous tissue growths in the oral cavity.
Lip cancer is a type of oral cancer. It happens when our lip is exposed to sun, alcohol, or HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). Besides that, the risk of lip and oral cancer increases after the age of 35 where men are often than women. This is because men more likely to smoke and drink than women. However, the major cases of lip cancer are because of the squamous cell carcinoma.

Early stage of lip cancer has no symptoms. But when it comes to severe condition, we will notice that there is a non-healing lesion on the lower lip. Besides the lip, other areas also may involve as the lip cancer spread. The common symptoms of lip cancer are:
- Lip bleeding.
- Area around the lip changed in color.
- Enlargement of lymph nodes.
- There is a lump in the lip.
- The jaw or mouth becomes swollen.
- Lip sore and does not heal.
- The lip feels numb, pain and tingling.
- Area on the lip thickened.
However, there are some symptoms that might indicate serious condition if the lesion not be treated such as:
- Rapid heartbeat.
- Bleeding excessively.
- Fatigue.
- Level of consciousness changing.
- Having high fever (usually higher than 101 degree Fahrenheit).
- Not be able to eat, drink, talk and breathe.
- Physical appearance change.

To prevent ourselves from the risk of lip and oral cancer, we need to take care of our oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice a day everyday with fluoride toothpaste. Besides that, please go and check with your dentist twice a year. This can help your teeth and gums stay in healthy condition. Regular dental checkup can detect the lip and oral cancer early and easy to be treated during the early stage.
