Tinnitus

Tinnitus is hearing a sound, such as ringing, buzzing or hissing, when there is no outside source. It is common, and for many people it is mild, but for some it affects sleep, concentration and mood.

Common causes and triggers

  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Age-related hearing loss
  • Earwax blockage or ear infection
  • Some medicines, including some pain relievers and antibiotics
  • Stress, tiredness and poor sleep
  • Jaw or neck problems
  • High blood pressure and other medical conditions

What usually helps

A hearing test is the first step. Sound therapy, hearing aids if there is hearing loss, protecting your ears from loud noise, and managing stress and sleep can all reduce how much tinnitus bothers you. There is no medicine that removes it in everyone.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine

At The Tole, neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as a complement to hearing care. They aim to ease tension and support circulation around the head, neck and ears.

Research on acupuncture for tinnitus is mixed and of limited quality, so we do not promise that the sound will go away. Some people find it becomes less bothersome.

Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole

At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The Master’s team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs and the family’s ancestral formulas.

You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.

Common questions

Can acupuncture cure tinnitus?

We cannot promise this. Some people find the sound less intrusive, but research is mixed and results vary.

Should I see an ENT doctor first?

Yes, a hearing check can find treatable causes such as earwax or infection. Please bring any audiogram you have.

Will tinnitus go away by itself?

Sometimes, especially after loud noise exposure. If it lasts more than a few weeks, see your doctor.

See a doctor first if

  • Sudden hearing loss in one ear, with or without tinnitus. See a doctor on the same day
  • Tinnitus in one ear only, or a pulsing sound that beats with your heart
  • Dizziness or loss of balance, ear discharge, or facial weakness
  • Tinnitus that affects your sleep or mood
