Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses, the air spaces around the nose and cheeks. It causes a blocked nose, facial pressure and thick mucus. It can follow a cold, or be ongoing (chronic) and linked to allergy.
What you might notice
- A blocked or runny nose, and mucus dripping down the throat
- Pressure or pain around the cheeks, eyes and forehead
- Reduced sense of smell, and a cough
- Headache, tiredness and bad breath
Acute versus chronic
Most acute sinusitis follows a virus and clears in about ten days. Sinusitis lasting more than 12 weeks is called chronic. Allergy, polyps, a deviated septum and haze or smoke are common contributors.
What usually helps
Saline rinses, steam, fluids, rest and, for allergy, antihistamines or nasal steroid sprays. Antibiotics are only needed for some bacterial infections.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine
At The Tole, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as a complement to medical care. They aim to ease congestion and facial pressure. Research is limited and mixed, so we do not promise a particular result.
Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole
At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, in the way developed by our founder, Dato’ Leong Hong Tole. Master Tole is the founder of TheTole neuro acupuncture and TheTole neuro brain powder, and the treatment is based on his own technique and on the family’s ancestral formulas. His team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs.
Treatment at The Tole is used together with your medical treatment, to support your recovery. We never ask anyone to stop the care their doctor has advised.
You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.
Please consult before you buy. Before you purchase any TheTole herbs, including TheTole neuro brain powder, we recommend consulting Dato’ Tole or his team first, so that you receive the correct prescription for your condition.

Common questions
Can acupuncture help blocked sinuses?
Some people feel clearer, but evidence is limited. We offer it alongside saline rinses and medical care.
Do I need antibiotics?
Often not. Your doctor can tell whether an infection is likely bacterial.
Why do my sinuses flare with haze?
Smoke and fine particles irritate the nose lining. Masks and avoiding outdoor activity on bad-air days can help.
See a doctor first if
- Swelling or redness around the eye, or double vision. Urgent care
- Severe headache with fever and a stiff neck
- Symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement, or getting worse after improving
- Frequent episodes, or bleeding from the nose
