Infertility means not being pregnant after a year of regular, unprotected sex, or after six months if the woman is over 35. It is common, affecting about one in six couples, and the cause may lie with either partner or both.
Common factors
- Ovulation problems, including polycystic ovary syndrome (see our PCOS page)
- Blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis or fibroids
- Age, particularly for women over 35
- Low sperm count or poor sperm movement
- Weight, smoking, alcohol and stress
- Sometimes no cause is found
See a fertility specialist
Tests such as hormone checks, an ultrasound and a semen analysis can find treatable causes. Fertility treatments such as ovulation medicines, IUI or IVF may be recommended. Both partners should be checked.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine as support
At The Tole, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as supportive care, either on their own while you try naturally or alongside fertility treatment. They aim to support the menstrual cycle, general health and calm during a stressful time.
Research on acupuncture and fertility is mixed. We cannot promise pregnancy and we do not make claims about success rates. Please do not use herbs during IVF cycles without telling your fertility team.
Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole
At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The Master’s team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs and the family’s ancestral formulas.
You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.

Common questions
Can acupuncture help me get pregnant?
We cannot promise this. Some people find it helps with relaxation and cycle regularity. Studies on pregnancy outcomes have given mixed results.
Can men be treated too?
Yes. Male factors are part of about half of cases, and men are welcome. A semen analysis from a doctor is a good first step.
Is it safe to take herbs while trying to conceive?
Some herbs are not suitable around conception or pregnancy. Please tell us you are trying to conceive so the Master’s team can plan carefully.
See a doctor first if
- Not pregnant after 12 months of trying, or 6 months if the woman is over 35
- Very irregular or absent periods, or severe period pain
- Known conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids or a past pelvic infection
- Severe abdominal pain or heavy bleeding. Seek urgent care, as it may be an ectopic pregnancy
