Pharyngeal cancer is less common than other head and neck cancers. There are three locations pharyngeal cancer usually occur:
- The nasopharynx - located behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate.
- The oropharynx - located on the base of tounge, tonsil and under the surface of the soft palate.
- The hypopharynx - the tumor located at the bottom part of the throat.

Pharyngeal cancer occurs when cells in the throat or mouth develop genetic mutations. This genetic mutations lead to uncontrollable cells growth. They will continue living even though they have been achieved the life span of normal cell. The living cells will cause accumulation and then forming a tumor in the mouth or throat.
There are few common things that can increase the risk factor of pharyngeal cancer. The risk factors are:
- Smoking.
- Excessive alcohol intake.
- Chewing tobacco.
- Exposed to asbestos or certain industrial chemicals such as coal or diesel fumes.
- Tissue grows abnormally.
- Less emphasis on oral hygiene.
- Taking too much "salty meat".
- Being 65 years old or older.

In early stage, pharyngeal cancer may not have symptoms. But when it comes to a certain level, the symptoms will show up. The common pharyngeal cancer symptoms could include:
- Difficult to swallow.
- Sore throat or hoarseness.
- There was a lump in the throat.
- Coughing of blood mixed phlegm.
- Lesion in the mouth.
- Difficult to speak.
- Throat turned into red.
- Bad breath.
- Pain in the ear or ringing in the ears.
- Headaches.
- Unexplained weight loss.
