Infarct

Infarct is a condition where part of the body’s tissue dies due to lack of blood flow and oxygen. The most common type is brain infarct, also known as ischemic stroke. This happens when blood clots or blocked vessels stop oxygen from reaching the brain.

Common Symptoms:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body)
  • Confusion or trouble speaking
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Sudden severe headache

An infarct can happen in the heart, brain, or other organs—but stroke (brain infarct) is the most serious and common.

What Causes It?

From a Western view, infarcts are usually caused by:

  • Blood clots
  • Blocked or narrowed arteries
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking

How TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Understands Infarct

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, an infarct—especially in the brain—is often due to:

  1. Qi and Blood Stagnation – When the flow of energy and blood in the body is blocked.
  2. Liver Yang Rising – Often caused by long-term stress or anger, leading to high blood pressure.
  3. Internal Wind – A concept in TCM where sudden movement (like a stroke) is seen as wind invading the body.

In short, TCM sees infarct as an imbalance in the body’s internal energy flow, often linked to liver, heart, kidney, and spleen disharmony.
