Pulmonary Fibrosis

Pulmonary Fibrosis (Idiopathic or Advanced)

Pulmonary Fibrosis is a progressive lung disease where scar tissue forms in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe and for oxygen to pass into the bloodstream. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) has no clear cause, while advanced cases can stem from chronic inflammation, environmental exposure, or autoimmune conditions.

TCM Perspective on Pulmonary Fibrosis

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pulmonary fibrosis is often linked to Lung Qi deficiency, Yin deficiency, and phlegm stagnation with blood stasis. Long-term weakness in the Lungs can lead to dryness, impairing the Lung’s ability to disperse and descend Qi. This dryness damages Yin, while phlegm and blood stasis block the air passages.

Over time, the imbalance spreads to the Spleen (reducing transformation of fluids) and the Kidneys (weakening grasping of Qi), leading to more breathlessness and fatigue.

Common TCM Patterns

  1. Lung Qi and Yin Deficiency – Shortness of breath, dry cough, dry throat, low-grade fever in the afternoon.
  2. Phlegm-Heat Obstructing Lungs – Thick yellow phlegm, wheezing, chest tightness.
  3. Qi and Blood Stasis – Chest pain, purple lips, poor circulation.

TCM Approaches

  • Herbal Formulas – TCM prescriptions may aim to nourish Lung Yin, tonify Qi, transform phlegm, and invigorate blood to slow scarring progression.
  • Acupuncture – Points such as LU-9, BL-13, ST-36, and KI-3 may be used to strengthen Lung and Kidney function, regulate Qi flow, and ease breathlessness.
  • Breathing Exercises (Qi Gong) – Gentle movements and controlled breathing help expand lung capacity and improve Qi circulation.
  • Dietary Guidance – Moistening foods like pears, lily bulbs, snow fungus, and honey water can support Yin and reduce dryness.

Final Note

While TCM does not claim to reverse existing lung scarring, it aims to improve breathing comfort, reduce flare-ups, and enhance overall vitality, supporting patients alongside conventional care. If you’re experiencing the symptoms, please consult with a qualified TCM practitioner to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.
