What is Prolonged Cough?

Cough is a good response in which it helps clear the airways of mucus, infection and irritation. However, if it is prolonged it may be one symptom of a disease. Usually they will easily cope with prolonged cough muscle pain, vomiting, lack of sleep and susceptibility to stress.

Other than that, chronic cough or prolonged cough not only sufferers lose sleep and miss work, but they endure exhaustion, frustration and embarrassment.

What are the Prolonged Cough Causes?

Most smokers assume cough is a common problem but if it persists, it means there is something wrong; especially if you quickly feel tired and breathless (gasping breathing) when doing simple exercises, including stairs.

Common Causes of Prolonged Cough are :

  • Asthma
    Asthma is a chronic lung disease. Asthma is an airway in the lungs tend to inflammation and swelling. It comes along with chest tightness, shortness of breath and cough are common signs of asthma where it tends to be worse at night or early morning.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

In COPD, the lungs produce mucus (sputum) for which excess body reflex to try to clean up coughing. COPD-related tissue damage can cause wheezing. Spirometry test can determine a person suffering from COPD or not.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) 
    GERD is a disease of the stomach and esophagus that occurs when stomach acid is discharged into the throat caused by a weak valve. The main symptom is heartburn, but the cough is also one of the common symptoms of GERD with chest pain. GERD is the cause even unconscious for chronic cough.
  • Respiratory Infection
    Severe cough may persist for routes is possible because the air in your lungs are still in a state of sensitivity and inflammation. When this happens, it is called a syndrome of chronic airway cough. Another more serious respiratory infections is pneuminoa that can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Cough often produces mucus or phlegm green or brown, that is one of the common symptoms of the disease.

  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Feeling like liquid running down the back of throat.
  • Sore at throat.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Wheezing and shortness of breath.
  • Heartburn or a sour taste in mouth.
