腸胃Digestion

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common long-term condition of the gut that causes cramping pain, bloating and diarrhoea, constipation, or both. It does not damage the bowel, but it can be disruptive.

What you might notice

  • Abdominal pain or cramps relieved by passing stool
  • Bloating and wind
  • Diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating between them
  • Mucus in the stool, and a feeling of incomplete emptying

Common triggers

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Certain foods such as fatty meals, caffeine, alcohol and some high-FODMAP foods
  • Irregular meals and poor sleep
  • A past stomach infection

What usually helps

Regular meals, keeping a food and symptom diary, managing stress, exercise and, for some people, a low-FODMAP diet guided by a dietitian. Doctors can check for other conditions and offer medicines for symptoms.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine

At The Tole, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as a complement to those steps. Some studies suggest acupuncture may ease IBS symptoms, but results are mixed. We do not promise a particular outcome.

Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole

At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, in the way developed by our founder, Dato’ Leong Hong Tole. Master Tole is the founder of TheTole neuro acupuncture and TheTole neuro brain powder, and the treatment is based on his own technique and on the family’s ancestral formulas. His team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs.

Treatment at The Tole is used together with your medical treatment, to support your recovery. We never ask anyone to stop the care their doctor has advised.

You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.

Please consult before you buy. Before you purchase any TheTole herbs, including TheTole neuro brain powder, we recommend consulting Dato’ Tole or his team first, so that you receive the correct prescription for your condition.

Common questions

Can acupuncture help IBS?

Some people report less pain and bloating. Research is mixed, and we offer it alongside diet and stress care.

Is IBS dangerous?

No. It does not lead to cancer or damage the bowel, but other conditions can look similar and should be ruled out.

Why does stress affect my gut?

The brain and gut are closely connected. Stress can speed up or slow down the gut and increase pain.

See a doctor first if

  • Blood in the stool, black stools, or unexplained weight loss
  • Symptoms that begin after age 50, or wake you at night
  • Persistent vomiting, fever, or severe abdominal pain
  • A family history of bowel cancer or coeliac disease
