Dry eyes and eye strain

Dry eye happens when your eyes do not make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly. Long hours at screens, air-conditioning and ageing are common reasons. It causes grittiness, burning and tired, blurry eyes.

What you might notice

  • Gritty, burning or stinging eyes
  • Redness and a feeling of something in the eye
  • Watery eyes, which is the eye reacting to dryness
  • Blurred vision that clears with blinking, and eye fatigue

What usually helps

Following the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds), blinking fully, lubricating drops, warm compresses, and avoiding fans or air-conditioning blowing at your face. An eye doctor can check for other causes.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine

At The Tole, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as a complement to those steps. Some studies suggest acupuncture may ease dry-eye symptoms in some people, but evidence is limited. We do not promise a particular result.

Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole

At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, in the way developed by our founder, Dato’ Leong Hong Tole. Master Tole is the founder of TheTole neuro acupuncture and TheTole neuro brain powder, and the treatment is based on his own technique and on the family’s ancestral formulas. His team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs.

Treatment at The Tole is used together with your medical treatment, to support your recovery. We never ask anyone to stop the care their doctor has advised.

You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.

Please consult before you buy. Before you purchase any TheTole herbs, including TheTole neuro brain powder, we recommend consulting Dato’ Tole or his team first, so that you receive the correct prescription for your condition.

Common questions

Can acupuncture help dry eyes?

Some people report relief and some studies are encouraging, but quality is limited.

Is it from my screen?

Screen use reduces blinking, which dries the eyes. Breaks and a better setup help.

Should I see an eye doctor?

Yes, particularly for persistent symptoms, to rule out infection, allergy or other conditions.

See a doctor first if

  • Sudden vision loss, eye pain or a red painful eye. Urgent care
  • Light sensitivity with severe pain, or discharge
  • Dry eyes with dry mouth or joint pain, which may suggest an autoimmune condition
  • Contact lens wearers with pain or redness
